MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR Welcome to the University of the West Indies, School of Clinical Medicine and Research, The Bahamas Campus. Our community of highly qualified Faculty who are constantly growing and advancing in the field of Medicine and students with an eagerness for knowledge has established us as a campus of choice for Bahamians seeking to pursue their life-long ambitions of becoming medical doctors. As we continue to our make UWI the preferred option for students, we can truly be proud of the growth of campus since we were launched as a clinical training program under the auspices of the St. Augustine campus, Trinidad in 1997. Our commitment to a one University curriculum in the Faculty of Medical Sciences and to ensure a standard of excellence in teaching and learning are evident in the outcomes in the final MB BS examinations of an 88% pass rate for first time students equal those of the other four campuses. Our Postgraduate graduate program has also become an asset for nation building this program continues to expand not only because of the unparalleled quality of teaching and assistance provided by the faculty but also the increased family and financial obligations that militates against traveling abroad for PG students. Students at UWI SCMR have access to the University of the West Indies library services in Jamaica and we offer to the Bahamian community throughout the archipelago, the service of providing access and availability to health information, literature searches and reviews, all of this knowledge is only a fingertip away in real time. Our telemedicine lab has increased our ability to support educational lectures, training and case consultations and to bridge the digital divide within the geographical space, enabling us to get connected to the outside world and exchange information and advance partnerships. The research activities of UWI SCMR are impressive there has been exponential growth in research proposals submitted and accepted to our Ethics committee and to the Caribbean Health and Research Council. We are noting the translation of presentations to publications. Our efforts are being recognized too; with two Bahamians having tied for best paper at the 2013 CHRC Annual Conference in Barbados and on the international scene for the best paper at the American Geriatrics Society Meeting in Texas. This welcome is extended to prospective and current students, to the Alumni and friends of the University and the Bahamas. A journey of a thousand leagues begins with the first step. As we continue to make our mark we invite you join us as we continue on the mission of inspiring excellence and producing leaders. |
